-Is this her destiny ? And of people like her? To live in a cold world of silence, devoid of sound?
[ Visuals- AYJ premises]
- Perhaps not. To meet the challenge of their destiny, stands an amazing endeavor……

• Socio-Economic Rehabilitation
[Visuals- HI ppl undergoing vocational training, learning crafts, operating computers, and working in various offices of private & public sectors.]
All training, education & empowerment comes to naught unless a person is rehabilitated into mainstream society. Becoming a part of everyday society with dignity is the right of the hearing impaired.
The work of the Dept. of Socio-Economic Rehabilitation at NIHH starts with assessing candidates, providing them vocational training & placement to making them sustain at their place of employment.
[Recently, a Web-based course has been taken up with the help of the ‘National Technical Institute of the Deaf’ (NTID), Rochester, USA. This enables Indian students to attend lectures simultaneously along with the NTID students. It will mean less requirement of infrastructure & maybe no faculty at all for training in India. ]
A large number of rural employment opportunities have been generated in various parts of the country. Vocational Training Courses have been initiated even in remote North-Eastern states in 1994.
To achieve all this, apart from its own training programs, a high level collaboration with the NGOs across the country has been established, by giving them financial & technical assistance.

It is difficult to notice any impairment among the so called ‘hearing impaired’ students here. Only their way of communication is different.
Confidence, determination, & commitment are evident on their faces. As their destinies have been changed by the Ali Yavar Jung Institute, they are surging ahead towards goals of their own …….
The Institute has begun providing hundreds of placements every year in public & private sectors. In 1996, it even got the National award for the best Employer of the Handicapped. One of the biggest achievements of the Institute is that organizations voluntarily come for Campus Recruitment.

• Nationwide Outreach
[ Visuals-Images of the work being done in rural & remote areas. Non- Mumbai & Non-urban visuals]
As the majority of hearing impaired live in rural, remote & un-reachable areas, the Department of Outreach and Extension Services of the NIHH has played a crucial role.
Its teams of multi-professionals armed with diagnostic equipment and fitment aids, provide services by camping in rural and far flung areas - right from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. They also provide guidance to rural NGOs in setting up service centers, pre-schools & vocational training centers etc.
When the District Rehabilitation Centers (DDRCs) under ‘Gramin Punarvasan Yojana’, a programme of the Central Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, was started in the year 2000, 24 DDRCs were allotted to the Ali Yavar Jung Institute.

CHANGING SOCIETY’S MINDSET so that it develops in-built safeguards, respect & empowerment of the hearing & speech impaired has been the real goal of the Institute, and the achievement of this is the real silver lining for NIHH on its Silver Jubilee.
Giving sounds to silence, on this occasion of its Silver Jubilee, in a resurgent India, NIHH has set for itself much higher standards & even higher goals …..so that all may hear !
Visuals- Sarita is studying. Someone pours water into a glass behind her. She hears that & turns back to look….
Sarita’s life has undergone a tremendous transformation. The dimension of sound is now as much part of her life as ours. With her impairment no more a hindrance, little Sarita bravely prepares for a new life.
For someone who didn’t comprehend high-decibel music Sarita has come a long way to hearing the sound of water pouring in a glass. Finally, sounds have pushed away her world of silence.
